ARTERIOSCLEROSIS

Arteriosclerosis is a thickening and hardening of the walls of arteries that lead to a loss in their elasticity. This is the most common form of heart disease. As the arteries grow older they undergo a thickening of their walls. In some people this occurs earlier and more severely than in others, probably through hereditary circumstances.

A fatty deposit of cholesterol called atheroma appears in the lining and walls of effected arteries. At a later stage it is possible to find deposits of calcium salts in the affected areas.

When this hardening has become well established, there is little evidence that a reversal is possible, but caught at an early stage, with the right treatment, containing it is a possibility.
