ASTHMA

Asthma is a condition of paroxysmal (sudden violent attacks) of difficult, laboured, wheezy breathing. With asthma, if protein-containing dust gets into the lung the inflammation produced by the antibody-allergen reaction (immunity mechanism of the body) occurring amongst the cells lining the airways cause:

  • Contraction of the special muscle (smooth) in the wall of the airway.
  • A swelling of the lining.
  • An outpouring of extra mucus.

These all combine to narrow the airway. The wheezy breathing is the airflow becoming turbulent and noisy. It is especially bad when breathing out, which normally needs no muscular effort but in severe asthma becomes a conscious hard squeeze...(more)
