DIVERTICULITISThe most common place in the body for this complaint to occur is in the colon. Even so it can occur anywhere along the digestive tract from the oesophagus (the gullet, the canal by which food passes to the stomach) to the colon. Diverticulita are small thin-walled pouches opening from the hollow organ. A person with these little pockets has diverticulosis, but may never know because they never cause any symptoms. As an estimate 10% of people 40 years of age or over has diverticulosis. The chances increase with advancing age of these existing pockets becoming infected, inflamed or ruptured resulting in diverticulitis.
