HYPERACTIVITY

Especially in Children

In certain children this is a behavioural problem. The pattern for which is the children concerned having a low threshold of concentration. Meaning they have a difficulty in concentrating on one activity.

Doctors do not often diagnose hyperactivity in the UK as they believe that a true case of hyperactivity is very rare. Suggestions have been made that some hyperactive children are so because of minimal brain damage. This is a dangerous assumption as there is no definite and damning evidence. Hyperactivity is more likely to be an inherited condition and is passed down through one of the parents. Food has been put forward as a cause, but it has very infrequently been proven so.

There are some illnesses that have hyperactivity as a side effect, such as:

  • Cerebral palsy.
  • Temporal lobe epilepsy.
  • Mental retardation.

Children who suffer from hyperactivity are always on the go, fidgety, sleep less than other children of the same age and are always full of energy. They never have a sense of danger and do some very reckless and devil-may-care actions. Aggression, irritability and emotional immaturity always seem to go hand in hand with hyperactivity...(more)
