IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

The colon is usually a well co-ordinated muscular activity. This co-ordination can be disturbed and result in muscular spasms and a build up of pressure within the bowel. The rhythm of the bowel is disrupted possibly causing troublesome abdominal pains, the pains are particularly in the lower left abdomen. This condition markedly occurs after a bout of enteritis or when suffering from continuous stress. Heavy smoking causes the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome to become more pronounced.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a combination of intermittent abdominal pains and irregular bowel habit, that is constipation, diarrhoea or alternate bouts of each that occurs when there is an absence of any other diagnosed disease. This disease is also known by two other names they are:

  • Irritable colon syndrome.

  • Spastic colon.

The symptoms subside and lay dormant for periods at a time, but once a person suffers from irritable bowel syndrome it usually re-occurs throughout the sufferers life.
