THROMBOPHLEBITIS

Thrombophlebitis is a blood clot with inflammation present in the vein (venous thrombosis). This most commonly affects the leg veins. The affected vein feels like a tender cord if the complaint is superficial. It is serious if the complaint is thrombosis of the deeper veins as the vital organs could become blocked by the blood clots breaking off and travelling through the blood vessels. A large clot (embolus) could reach the lungs and cause death. After an injury, the physical inactivity greatly increases the tendency for clots to form. For this reason doctor's and nurses for preventative reasons encourage patients to get up soon after surgery or childbirth, or bedridden patients to carry out movements of the legs frequently. Anticoagulant drugs, raising the foot of the bed and warmth treatment that retard clotting are some of the measures of treatment for an active venous thrombosis...(more)
