VERTIGOThis is a common complaint and is only very rarely a sign that there is an underlying disorder. Vertigo is an illusion that a person's surroundings are either spinning horizontally or vertically. Many times the word vertigo is wrongly used to explain a sensation of dizziness or faintness. It is caused by a disturbance of the semi-circular canals of the inner ear or the nerves leading from them. It can affect healthy people at certain times, such as on an amusement park ride, when sailing or even when sitting watching a movie.
