VERTIGO

This is a common complaint and is only very rarely a sign that there is an underlying disorder. Vertigo is an illusion that a person's surroundings are either spinning horizontally or vertically. Many times the word vertigo is wrongly used to explain a sensation of dizziness or faintness.

It is caused by a disturbance of the semi-circular canals of the inner ear or the nerves leading from them. It can affect healthy people at certain times, such as on an amusement park ride, when sailing or even when sitting watching a movie.

If the vertigo is severe and is accompanied by other symptoms it could be an indication that the victim is actually suffering from one of a number of complaints such as:

• Labyrinthitus (inflammation of the semi-circular canals. This is also accompanied by vomiting anti unsteadiness. This is usually a side effect of another complaint such as influenza).
• Menier's Disease - this is a lot more alarming as the sufferer can actually fall to the ground - during an attack which may be accompanied by severe vomiting, tinnitus (noises in the ears), nystagmus (jerky eye movements) and unsteadiness.
